The transition from DGNB certification version 2018 to 2023

Our event on 17 January 2024 on the key updates live at builtworld.com

The revision of the certification system of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) from last year shows a clear focus on simplification and alignment with European standards. By reducing the catalogue from 37 to 29 criteria and consolidating topics, the certification was made more accessible. The integration of the requirements of the EU Taxonomy, the EU reporting framework Level(s) and the QNG seal underlines the effort to take national and international requirements into account without creating additional documentation work.

In the revised version, the obligation to meet minimum requirements at the highest award level, Platinum, was also added. Achieving climate neutrality in operation by 2030 at the latest is one of these obligations. A transparent justification is also required for the decision to dismantle, as well as proof of minimum contributions to promoting biodiversity and the mobility transition.

Overall, the revision of the DGNB certification system aims to raise sustainability standards in the construction industry while streamlining the certification process.

In cooperation with Builtworld, our consultants Débora Alves de Alcantara and Nadine Haberbosch explain the updated focus areas of version 2023 of the DGNB certification system and invite discussion.

Another topic will be a comparison of DGNB and the EU Taxonomy. Environmental and social standards, including energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and social impacts, are mandatory in order to be considered taxonomy-eligible. Potentially easier access to financing, higher market demand and better value development for taxonomy-compliant properties provide clear incentives for investors and developers to adapt to these standards.
